Get in the Best Shape of Your Life

Rowers are complete athletes.  They need strength to pull on a heavy oar, endurance to race hard for 6 minutes, and power to put on a burst of speed to row past their opponents.  Members of the varsity squad train year-round to compete at the highest level in collegiate club rowing.  Training is done with weights, machines and, best of all, on the mighty Mississippi River right here on campus.

Winter Training from November until mid-March.

Winter is the key season to build the strength, stamina and endurance to win races in the spring championship season. The team will row 5-6 days per week using various training devices, from the standard Concept 2 rowing machines, weights, kettlebells and an indoor rowing tank. Occasionally, the team will go outside in the heavy snow for some more creative workouts.

Racing Season - September-October (Fall) and March-May (Spring)

On the water practices are held on Monday-Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Practices will focus on improving your rowing technique, learning to make a boat go fast, and is often supplemented by land training with weights and machines. For the spring season, the personnel in the eight-man crews are generally set and you and your boatmates will be working together every practice to prepare for races.
